Christian Counseling

Christian Counseling in Austin

This is licensed therapy with your faith woven in when you ask for it. I am a Christian and seminary trained, and how much of that comes into our sessions is your decision, never assumed or introduced without your say-so.

Faith in the room, on your terms

Christian counseling here is therapy first: the same licensed, trauma-informed care I offer anyone, with your faith invited in as a resource whenever you want it there. For you, that might mean Biblical counseling and scripture at the center of our work. It might mean simply knowing your therapist will not flinch when you mention God, prayer or church. You set the level, and you can change it any week. Faith is never assumed or introduced without your say-so, and "not today" is always an acceptable answer.

If you want it to be, faith can be a wonderful resource for healing, and it can even become the guiding one. I believe that deeply, and I will not pretend otherwise. I also believe your faith has to be yours. You do not need a tidy belief, the right vocabulary or a particular church background to be welcome here. You only need to be honest about where you are today, and we will start there.

Seminary trained, and a licensed therapist first

I earned my master's in Marriage and Family Therapy at Fuller Theological Seminary, and I am licensed in Texas as an LMFT-S, with 17 years as a clinician. That combination means I can integrate spiritual questions, faith, anger, forgiveness and reconciliation into clinical work without either one crowding out the other. Biblical counseling is available if you ask for it. Alongside it, I use the methods described on my approach page, including CBT and Trauma-Focused CBT, so faith is added to sound clinical care rather than used in place of it.

What Christian counseling can hold

Faith rarely sits in its own compartment. It shows up inside grief, marriage, parenting, anxiety and the oldest wounds from your family, and Christian counseling lets all of it share the same room. When the church itself is where the harm happened, healing from church hurt speaks to that directly. When belief has started to wobble, or the questions have grown louder than the answers, therapy for faith questions and doubt is a gentle place to begin.

If you want, we can look together at what you are carrying through the lens of your relationship with God, alongside what your history and your body are telling us. Nothing on this list has to be tidy, or even fully named, before you bring it in, and nothing has to be resolved on someone else's timeline. Some of what this work can include:

  • Anger at God, at a church or at yourself
  • Forgiveness someone is pressing you to rush
  • Reconciliation, and whether it is wise or safe
  • Betrayal or the end of a Christian marriage
  • Church hurt, church or cult trauma
  • "Why God?" questions after loss or suffering

Anger, forgiveness and reconciliation

Forgiveness can be handed to you as an instruction before anyone has acknowledged the harm. In our work it is a process, not a deadline. We can talk honestly about anger, including anger at God, without treating it as a failure of faith. We can look at the difference between forgiving someone and trusting them again, and at whether reconciliation is possible, good or not yet safe. Safety comes before breakthrough, and the pace belongs to you, including the pace at which you release anything to God.

I have experienced betrayal and the end of a Christian marriage myself, so I will never hand you forgiveness as a slogan. I know this pain well. If a broken marriage is part of what brought you here, betrayal trauma therapy and divorce care may be where we begin, with your faith as present or as quiet as you need it to be in each session.

Christian counseling or Christian coaching?

I offer both, and they are different services. Christian counseling is therapy: licensed clinical care that can assess, diagnose and address past trauma, relationship struggles and the patterns underneath them. Because it is therapy, it is Texas only, in person in Southwest Austin or by telehealth while you are located in Texas. Christian coaching and mentoring is not therapy. It stays future-focused, applying biblical wisdom to calling, leadership, personal growth and relationships, and because it is non-clinical, it is available in all 50 states and globally.

If you are not sure which fits, bring that question to the free consultation, or read my guide on choosing between therapy and coaching. One simple way to think about it: if the past keeps reaching into the present, counseling is usually the better place to start. If you feel steady and want clarity about calling or the road ahead, coaching may be enough.

Meeting in Austin or anywhere in Texas

If you are in or near Austin, in-person sessions are at my office at 5900 Southwest Pkwy, Building 5, Suite 230, in Southwest Austin, on Fridays and some select other times and days as schedules allow. Friday appointments fill first. Walk-and-talk sessions outdoors are another option, and telehealth across Texas reaches anywhere in the state, in English or Spanish. The initial assessment is $275 for 80 minutes. Individual sessions are $190 for 50 minutes or $275 for 80 minutes, and the rates page lists couples and family fees along with the sliding scale.

Common Questions

Do I have to be a Christian to work with you?

No. I am a Christian, and faith is part of therapy here only when you want it. It is never assumed or introduced without your say-so, and you are welcome to keep it outside the room entirely.

What is the difference between Christian counseling and Christian coaching?

Christian counseling is licensed therapy for people located in Texas, and it can address past trauma and relationship patterns. Christian coaching and mentoring is non-clinical and future-focused, applying biblical wisdom to calling, leadership, personal growth and relationships. Because coaching is not therapy, it is available in all 50 states and globally.

Can Biblical counseling be part of our sessions?

Yes, if you ask for it. I am seminary trained, and Biblical counseling is available on request. You decide how much of it we use, and you can say no to it on any day.

What does Christian counseling cost?

Christian counseling is billed like any other therapy here. The initial assessment is $275 for 80 minutes, and individual sessions are $190 for 50 minutes or $275 for 80 minutes. A sliding scale between $90 and $190 has limited spots, and monthly superbills are available for possible out-of-network reimbursement.

The consultation is free and there is no obligation on either side.
