Church Hurt

Healing From Church Hurt

When the place that promised belonging becomes the place that wounded you, the hurt reaches into everything: trust, identity, family and your sense of God. Wherever you are with faith right now, I will meet you there with compassion and no judgment.

When the hurt came from inside the church

Church hurt can take many forms. Maybe you were shamed from the pulpit or in a small group, pushed out after asking an honest question, or told to forgive and move on before anyone admitted what happened. Maybe a leader you trusted used scripture to control you, or a community that felt like family went quiet when you needed it most. Whatever the shape, it can leave you flinching at worship music, dreading Sunday mornings, or unsure whether you can trust your own memory of what happened.

Broken people, and the God question

My own belief is that church hurt is really broken sinful people hurt. I am a Christian, and I say that plainly because you deserve to know who you are talking to. I also keep that belief in its place, because it is mine and not a requirement for you. You may still love God and be furious with a church. You may not know what you believe anymore. Either way, our work centers on what happened to you, not on defending an institution or steering you back into a pew.

Holding faith loosely, or not at all, for a while

Healing from church hurt sometimes means holding faith very loosely for a while, or not at all. That is allowed here. You decide whether faith is central to our work, sits quietly in the background, or stays outside the room until you are ready to look at it again, if you ever are. If you want to untangle what you were taught about God from how you were treated in God's name, we can do that slowly. If you would like Biblical counseling, it is available on request, and Christian counseling describes how that works.

Church or cult trauma

Sometimes the harm went deeper than one painful season. When a group controlled who you spoke to, what you wore, how you spent your money or what you were allowed to question, leaving can cost you your community, your family relationships and your whole map of the world at once. That can be trauma, and I treat it as trauma. Trauma is the primary specialty here, and trauma therapy with me starts with stability, not with retelling every detail.

We build steadiness in your body and your days first, drawing on Seeking Safety when trauma and unsafe coping are intertwined. Safety comes before breakthrough. When you are ready, Trauma-Focused CBT can help you work with painful memories at a pace you can stay with, and my five-minute video on TF-CBT shows how I use it. You can say no to a topic and nothing bad happens.

Identity, trust and belonging after church

Church hurt tends to reach past faith into the rest of your life. You may be renegotiating relationships with family members who still attend, grieving friendships that ended when you left, or wondering who you are without the roles you held for years. If early family rules and church rules were braided together, family of origin work may be part of the picture too. Together we can look at:

  • Trusting your own perception again
  • Boundaries with family and friends still inside
  • Grief for the community you lost
  • Shame that still speaks in a preacher's voice
  • Belonging that does not cost you yourself

Starting at your own pace

There is no entrance exam here. You do not need a diagnosis, a polished explanation or a settled view of God to start, and a few honest sentences are enough. The free 15-minute consultation is the place to ask anything, including whether faith will come up at all. Sessions happen at my Southwest Austin office on Fridays and some select other times and days as schedules allow, outdoors on a walk-and-talk, or by telehealth anywhere in Texas while you are located in Texas. If your questions are more about doubt than hurt, faith questions and doubt may be a closer fit.

Common Questions

Will you try to bring me back to church?

No. Healing from church hurt sometimes means holding faith very loosely for a while, or not at all, and that is respected here. Faith is never assumed or introduced without your say-so.

Can I still love God and need help with church hurt?

Yes. You can hold onto your faith and still be deeply hurt by people in a church. If you want Biblical counseling as part of the work, it is available on request.

What if what happened to me felt more like a cult?

Church or cult trauma is part of the work here, and trauma is the primary specialty. We build stability first, and trauma work does not depend on retelling everything.

Can I work with you if I live outside Texas?

Therapy is Texas only, so you need to be located in Texas during sessions. Christian coaching and mentoring is available in all 50 states and globally, but it is non-clinical and is not therapy.

The consultation is free and there is no obligation on either side.
